Males are held in a higher regard than females in society even during these times, this is why they are considered ideal targets and make for bigger market demand targets than females.

According to statistics gathered, of all the types of victim crimes, intimidation is the most common amongst both women and men. The majority of the victims are males, 1.6% of men are more to be victims of human trafficking than 1.1% of women. They further show how men (0.9%) than 0.5% of women fall victim to assault as well as sexual offences and due to the sensual society of men being strong more women than men report that they have been victimised thus making them easier targets.

Aubrey McMahon writes an article explaining how males are the silent victims of human trafficking and are suffering under our watch, “ They are vastly underrepresented by the news stories and dramatization of this human trafficking in books and movies”.

According to the CT data collaboration, since 2018, 98% of men have been victimised of these crimes whereas 60% of women were victims, young girls at the percentage of 86 and young boys at 101.

Studies further explain that almost half of the male victims were recruited by an acquaintance and are usually trafficked and controlled through false promises such as avoiding being sexually abused, avoiding being used as lab rats. Other examples of why makes are ideal Human Trafficking targets is that they forced to use psychoactive substance thus lab rats, physical abuse in sexual manners and labour-related methods such as withholding of earnings and excessive working hours under harsh conditions.

“Human Trafficking is all about the profit, it is driven and at the end of the day it is basic economics- supply and demand,” says Dr Monique Emser who explains more about Human Trafficking in South Africa in an interview with Neo Matloang( SABC).

She further expands on UNESCO’s idea of push and pulls factors of Human Trafficking in cases of both women and men being victims.
